Sourcefire® Security Education Program

Sourcefire understands that security is a huge concern for enterprises and that a secure network is vital to the success of your company. Sourcefire’s Certification Program is designed to keep your staff current and confident that your organization has the knowledge and skills required to deploy and maintain a secure environment.

Sourcefire Education has a variety of training offerings to help security professionals using Sourcefire products or open source security solutions get the most out of their investment. Sourcefire training includes instructor-led and custom classes delivered at various locations around the world and onsite at customer premises.

In addition to flexible training offerings, Sourcefire provides a path for interested candidates to distinguish themselves through a certification program. Certification can be achieved on both Sourcefire products and open source SNORT®, including an expert-level exam for those professionals who want to obtain certification on both technologies. Through testing and training, certification provides employees and employers with an understanding of each individual’s skills and experience with Snort and Sourcefire products.

Sourcefire Certification Program

The Sourcefire Certification Program offers three levels of individual achievement.


SFCP | SnortCP | SFCE

Sourcefire Certified Professional (SFCP)

Candidates that successfully complete the requirements of this certification track have distinguished themselves as having in-depth and thorough knowledge of Sourcefire products and their underlying technical concepts. Their skills in key areas are evaluated against Sourcefire’s certification criteria. The following products and skill areas are assessed through this process:

  • Sourcefire IPS
  • Defense Center
  • Sourcefire RNA
  • Installation and Deployment
  • Administration and Management
  • Policy Configuration and Management
  • Policy Non-compliance and Remediation
  • User Administration and Management
  • Reporting Creation and Management
  • Effective and Performance-Oriented Rule Writing

Snort Certified Professional (SnortCP)

This certification option is centered on Snort, the industry leading open source intrusion prevention solution. Candidates are assessed on a wide range of criteria that encompasses all the necessary open source components and technical skills for successful implementation and management of Snort technology. Sourcefire’s certification criteria ensures that successful candidates stand out in the industry through the recognition of their capabilities by evaluating their skills in the following areas:

  • Snort IPS Technology Theory
  • Installation and Deployment
  • Snort Configuration and Usage
  • Snort Tuning Techniques
  • Snort Rules Language and Syntax
  • Advanced Rule Options and Usage

Sourcefire Certified Expert (SFCE)

This certification track represents a unique opportunity for individuals that wish to establish themselves at the highest levels of expertise in the industry through the mastery of the combined bodies of knowledge from both the SnortCP program and the SFCP program. Successful candidates are truly distinguished through more rigorous certification criteria based on more more advanced, technically challenging material.

Training Delivery Methods

Sourcefire offers both instructor-led and onsite delivery options.

Instructor-led Courses - Sourcefire instructors educate security professionals around the world through instructor-led classroom training, custom courses that are unique to customer environments and onsite training at the customer premises. Each instructor-led class includes a reference course manual, hands-on training, lecture, labs, continental breakfast, lunch and beverages.

Onsite Courses – Sourcefire’s onsite training option helps customers spend their money wisely when eight or more individuals require training. The same training methods and deliverables are provided at the location requested by the customer.

Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Credits:

ISC2 Trusted CPE Provider As a “Trusted CPE Provider” for (ISC)2, Sourcefire offers students holding certifications as a System Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP) or Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), the ability to earn one Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credit for each hour of education earned.  To obtain credit, students should provide their CISSP number on the registration form.
